A raucous crowd filled Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night as the AMA Arenacross Series provided a sneak preview of the 2010 season at the second annual Des Moines prequel race. With an $11,000 purse up for grabs, Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers, of Danville, Ky., claimed the AMA Arenacross class victory while Storm Lake Honda’s Kurt McCabe, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa took the AMA Arenacross Lites win.

The race from Des Moines is a stand-alone race and is not part of the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series.

In a lineup that featured four former champions and a bevy of race winners, Triple Effect Kawasaki’s Gray Davenport, of Lehi, Utah, edged out Bowers and Funmart Cycle Center KTM’s Kelly Smith, of Ludington, Mich. for the holeshot. After putting pressure on Davenport for several laps, Bowers made his move for the lead and paced the field the rest of the way.

“(This) feels pretty good,” said Bowers, who returns to the AMA Arenacross Series after a two-year stint in Monster Energy® Supercross. “Josh (Demuth) was there at the end and kept me honest but I just settled in and pulled away. I came out like a rocket ship off the line and settled into third, made a couple passes and maintained my pace.”

North Richland Hills, Texas’ Josh Demuth and Rhinelander, Wis.’s Chad Johnson made it a clean sweep for the Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki on the AMA Arenacross class podium.

In the deep AMA Arenacross Lites field, local favorite Gavin Faith, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, grabbed the holeshot aboard his TiLUBE Motorsports Honda but fell just before the completion of the first lap, eliminating him from competition. Fellow Hawkeye state native McCabe took over the top spot and never looked back. The reigning AMA Arenacross Lites Central Region champion led all 18 laps of the main event to post a big win in front of his hometown fans.

“It feels awesome,” exclaimed McCabe. “I got a good jump off gate. Unfortunately, Gavin fell. I was looking forward to having a good race with him. Once I got out front I just went from there.”

Cory Green, of Nowata, Okla., captured the runner-up position while 2009 Arenacross Lites Midwest Regional champion Dave Ginolfi, of Lake Hopatlong, N.J., finished third.

The AMA Arenacross Series kicks off its 2010 season on January 8-10 from Grand Rapids, Mich.

This weekend the sand of Wildwood NJ will host the fall version of the annul event. NJ Motocross will be on hand on Sunday covering the event. Look for coverage next week on the website.

Here is some information about the event provided by Thunder Motorsports:

THE WILDWOODS, NJ- The thrill and excitement of motocross come to the Wildwoods on October 9-11, 2009 with the “Fall Thunder in the Sand” beach race! This weekend’s event consists of AMA-sanctioned Pro-Am motocross races which range from the beginner level to the area’s top professional racers. All of the weekend’s races take place on the pristine Wildwood beach between Schellenger and Spencer Avenues, which happens to be voted the best beach in New Jersey! This is the only time you can camp on the beach and have the back drop of the ocean while watching and/or racing for 3 days of pure motocross action!
This weekend’s race is the 3rd round of Thunder Motorsport’s “Atco/Thunder In the Sand Series”, which goes to Wildwood on October 9-11, and back to Atco for the final round on November 14-15.
Registration times for the Wildwood race:
Friday: 9 am to 8:30 pm Saturday: 8 – 11 am Window closes no exceptions
It’s not just all about the motocross racing; Thunder Motorsports will also be holding sand drag races on Friday.
Schedule of Events Thursday – Gates open at 6pm. Friday – Regular Practice 1-4 (Price – $15) Drag Racing – 6:30pm Saturday – Practice – 9-11am – Racing Starts at Noon. Sunday – Hot Laps – 9am – Racing Starts at 10am. (Check for Saturday and Sunday practice times at http://www.thundermoto.com/!)
Rates: Amateur Classes: $30, Pro Classes: $40, Adult Spectators: $7, Child Spectators Under 4: FREE!

Ronnie has quietly begun making a name for himself on the national circuit. His 24th fastest qualifying time put him in front of big named riders like Jeff Alessi, Nick Wey and Factory Kawasaki rider Timmy Ferry. Ronnie went 29-24 for 28th overall.

After setting the 5th fastest time in the first practice Dakota Kessler was a victim of a drying track that rewarded the second practice session with lower times. Kessler missed the cut and was 40th fastest in timed qualifying.

Over the past couple of weeks 2 New Jersey racers have been traveling north of the border in an attempt to make their mark on the Canadian motocross scene. Round 5 was held at Gopher Dunes in Ontario Canada on July 19th. Mt Holly Racing teammates Ryan Gainey and Bryan Wallace finished in the top 20 overall in the premier MX1 class. Wallace’s 15-16 moto finishes netted him 16th overall while Gainey’s 20-18 motos earned him 20th overall.

Held at Ste-Thecle in Quebec round 6 was held under torrential rains and forced the normal 2 moto format to be shortened to just one moto. Wallace was able to survive the quagmire and finished 17th. Gainey was able to get a good start and was rewarded for his hard work with 5th place. The best ever finish by a New Jersey rider in Canadian motocross.

Despite competing in only 2 events both riders are in the top 25 in the overall points standings. Gainey sits in 21st while Wallace is in 25th.
