Yamaha Factory ATV Race Team Readies for 2009 Season
Championship Teams Kickoff First Full Season on the All-New, Highly-Anticipated YFZ450R

CYPRESS, Calif. – February 24, 2009 – Yamaha’s ATV race team is in final preparations for the 2009 race season and will enter a number of the top ATV racing series, including GNCC, QuadCross, WORCS and AMA MX, over the next two weekends.  This is the first season that each Yamaha race team member will compete atop the all-new and highly-anticipated YFZ450R

Many of Yamaha’s ATV race team members were introduced last fall, but there have been a few additions to the team that have not yet been formally announced.  Members not yet announced include: Johnny Gallagher, a seasoned veteran who has spent years working with the Yamaha factory team on the GNCC circuit; Donnie Ockerman, the 2008 GNCC XC2 Pro-Am champion; Thomas Brown, the 2008 ATVA/AMA National Pro-Am Motocross champ; and Justin Noss, winner of the inaugural season of the 2008 QuadCross 250cc unlimited class on his Raptor 250.

Yamaha’s factory riders announced last fall include:

Bill Ballance, the nine-time consecutive Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) XC1 Pro series champion and widely considered the best ATV racer of all time.  Ballance suffered a rib injury last year and had to undergo surgery in the off-season.  The injury and resulting surgery interrupted his pre-season training, but in true championship-fashion Ballance will be back to chase his 10th consecutive title at the GNCC opener in Florida this coming weekend.  Ballance is from Smiths Grove, Ky., and runs the #1 plate.

Traci Cecco, the unprecedented seven-time GNCC womens’ title holder and veteran Yamaha race team member.  Cecco, who lives in Shamokin, Penn., and runs #201, will return to try to break her own record in 2009.

Brandon Sommers, the 2007 GNCC XC2 class champion, placed fifth last year in his first go at the XC1 class.  Sommers, #784, is back in XC1 for 2009 racing out of Millersburg, Ohio.

Pat Brown, 2008 Montreal Supercross champ and a top competitor for Yamaha in the AMA pro ATV motocross series.  Brown is from Pittstown, N.J., and runs the #99 plate.

Dustin Nelson, two-time Yamaha/ITP Quadcross MX Pro Class champion.  Nelson was the first Yamaha Team rider to race the YFZ450R at the end of last year when he took the holeshot and won a Quadcross moto at Glen Helen en route to his 2008 series title.  Nelson lives in Ramona, Calif., and runs #94.

National Enduro Series Round 1

Russell Bobbitt took the first win of the enduro season despite nearly destroying his bike in the process.

Factory KTM rider and reigning National Enduro Champion, Russell Bobbitt, proved just how he won the Championship crown in 2008 after a remarkable first place ride at the first round of the 2009 AMA National Enduro Series.

Bobbitt started the day off strong and continued to increase his lead on the field eventually winning three of the six special tests. He had quite a lead on the pack going into the last test when he hit a stump in the middle of the course and suffered a terrible high-speed crash. “I wrecked my bike pretty good in the crash and was lucky I finished the race,” commented Bobbitt. “I thought for sure my crash would cause me to lose the lead, but luckily I had enough time on the other riders that I was able to secure my first win.”

Bobbitt’s teammate, Mike Lafferty, had a bit of an off-day after struggling to find his rhythm in the first few tests. After the halfway point, Lafferty made a few changes that helped him increase his speed, however, it was too late in the race to finish on the podium and he had to settle for a fifth place finish.

Factory KTM GNCC XC-2 rider, Cory Buttrick, decided to race the first National Enduro before his GNCC season started and it proved to be a worthwhile trip. Buttrick started out well and rode a consistent race, surprising everyone when he finished third overall for the day. His GNCC XC-2 Lites teammate, Kailub Russell, also had a solid race finishing sixth overall.

National Enduro Series – 10th round Wickenburge, AZ
Red Bull KTM Factory rider Russell Bobbitt secured his second National Enduro Championship at the tenth round of the AMA National Enduro Series while his teammate Mike Lafferty finished in the runner-up position.

The course conditions were dry and rocky. “The course was very challenging today, but oddly enough, I think it was the first time I’ve ever had fun riding in Arizona,” commented Lafferty after the race.

Lafferty and Bobbitt both rode well throughout the day. Lafferty worked hard and won the majority of the tests which earned him the overall win. Bobbitt stayed strong and consistent and finished second which secured the championship. “I was happy with my ride today but knew that Russell would have to make some pretty big mistakes to lose the championship. I got the race win, but not the championship. Now I will go home and continue my training to come back and try to win the championship next year,” stated Lafferty.

“I am very excited about this championship. I worked hard all season long and am glad that I was able to have everything come together at the final round. It was a close title chase all year. I am happy for the entire team to earn first and second in the series,” reported Bobbitt.
