Time Machine… Raceway Park Supermoto 2007

When the AMA was looking for a Northeast point to take its 2007 National series, Englishtown was the most logical choice. The facility was the perfect venue and their brand new road course would be the site of the inaugural event. But for a Supermoto to be exciting there has to be a dirt section as well. So practice track designer Carl Anderson was called in to create two exciting motocross style jump sections that received rave reviews from the competitors. Since the series is still in its infancy the pits are an open style with no extra ticket required to get up close and personal with the men (and woman) and their machines. The series is contested by all of the major manufacturers and the entry list reads like a who’s who of motorcycle racing. From motocrossers like David Pingree and Jeff Ward, freestylers like Carey Hart, World Gp riders like Kurt Nicoll and the man behind Troy Lee Designs, Troy Lee himself this sport has it all.

Troy Lee Racing

Sunday’s event was lightly attended due to the rain in the forecast for the afternoon but those who came to the race saw excellent competition in all three professional classes.
Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites
Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Brandon Currie took the class win after taking the pole in his qualifier. He grabbed the early lead running Troy Lee Designs Honda rider wide in the first turn and never looked back. If he did get the chance to see behind him his goggles would have been full of Pingree who kept the Yamaha rider in his sights ready to make the move when Currie would make a mistake. That mistake never came and Currie went on to take the win with Pingree in second and Monster Kawasaki rider Matt Abbott in third.

Brandon Currie

M&R Supermoto Unlimited
Factory Aprilia Rip It Energy Racing’s Ben Carlson was the class of the Unlimited field taking the advantage from the pole and stretching his lead to a multi second advantage before backing it down to a close race by the end. Factory HMC KTM teammates Kurt Nicoll and Johnny Lewis rounded out the top three.

AMA Supermoto Premier Class
Although the forecasted rain held off for most of the day, by the time the premier class got started there was a light but steady drizzle coming down. Troy Lee Designs Honda rider Cassidy Anderson grabbed the early lead only to throw it away in the first slippery dirt section. Anderson’s teammate Jeff Ward and Graves Motorsports Yamaha mounted Mark Burkhart showed the rest of the field that this was to be their race eventually pulling out to a 20+ second lead. Ward and Burkhart battled each other tooth and nail as the track conditions deteriorated. Burkhart would go on to take the victory 4+ seconds over Ward with factory KTM rider Troy Herfoss rounding out the podium.

Mark Burkhardt

It looks like Supermoto racing is here to stay in the Northeast. With tight racing and exciting action it appears to be around for awhile. Check it out next time it’s around.

Loretta Lynns Qualifier 2008

Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park
Drake Dominates Area Qualifier

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, APR 12-13

The second annual Loretta Lynn’s area qualifier took place at Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey this past weekend. Torrential rains on Friday night gave way to foggy conditions as the first day of racing got under way. The fog would eventually burn off giving way to bright sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70′s making for a great day of racing. The hard rain left the loamy track rutted and difficult for all those in attendance hoping for an invitation to the Regional Qualifiers and eventually on to the big show, the AMA Amateur National Championships this August in Tennessee. Sunday’s weather was much different as a cold front pushed in dropping the temperatures and increasing the cloud cover. The predicted rains held off allowing for another great day of racing action.

Sunny Drake

Sunny DRake

Domination was the word for the weekend, as several riders went on to win all of the motos they entered.

At just 16 years old, Fulton New York Honda mounted Sunny Drake was the dominant “B” class rider of the weekend. Drake won every moto he entered, taking the victories in the Motocross and Motocross Lites stock and modified classes. Despite a dead last start in one moto, Drake showed he will be the man to beat at this year’s Regional winning in dominant fashion. Drake’s come from behind victory was especially impressive due to the level of competition competing. His time at MTF must be paying off.

Dominick Gustella

Dominick Guestella

Another dominant rider this weekend was Suzuki rider Dominick Guastella. Matching Drake’s “B” class victories, Guastella dominated the “C” class riders, taking control of each of his motos as well winning the Motocross and Motocross Lites Stock and Modified classes.

Dakota Kessler

Saturday’s racing witnessed local rider Dakota Kessler dominate the A class action taking all four of his moto victories. Dakota’s dad, Mickey, was a well known pro rider back in the 70′s and Dakota seems to be following in his Dad’s footsteps. The young Honda mounted Kessler put on a riding clinic, showing the competitive Expert field the way around his home track. While on Sunday Kessler was again a top contender. In the second MX Lites A/Pro Sport class, Kawasaki rider Paul Lamb got the best of him. Lamb got an early lead and held off the moto long charge, taking the slim victory over Kessler and eliminating Kessler’s perfect weekend.

Suzuki support rider Darian Robinson was the winner of the 85 (9-11) stock and modified classes by winning all 4 of his weekend’s motos.

Good luck to all those moving on to the regionals.

For many years Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park has awarded its top riders year end rewards. The famous point’s series jackets are a coveted item among the Northeast’s best motocross racers. At the end of 2006 track manager Rich Schmidt decided to step it up a notch and host a year end BBQ and awards banquet. The first one was a low key affair held in a garage at the racetrack. The event was so well received that for 2007 they did it again.

2007 Awards Banquet

2007 Awards Banquet

The 2007 BBQ portion of the evening was sponsored by local race team MC Motorsports Racing and their participating sponsors. Again held in a large garage on the track’s property riders and their families were treated to free food and drink as well as excellent desserts. The top 5 riders in each class were awarded the points championship jacket as well as other prizes from series sponsors MSR, FMF, Scott, Acerbis, No Toil and Bel-Ray.
The voice of Raceway Park, Rich Trevelise, was the emcee for the event and conducted interviews with the top riders as the rest of the staff handed out the more than $8000.00 in product prizes.
The biggest winner of the night was double expert class points champion Ryan Gainey. The Mt Holly Racing KTM rider won both expert class points championships. Gainey was joined on the championship podium in both classes by Dakota Kessler in second and Ronnie Stewart in third. Other multiple class championship winners on the evening were Jimmy McIlvaine (30 and 40 plus expert) Jacob Hartranft (85cc 7-11 and Junior Mini), and Jesse Pierce (85cc 12-13 and Supermini). The Hartranft and Pierce families both went home win other championships as well as younger brothers Keith Pierce (65cc 10-11) and Brandon Hartranft (65cc 7-9) took championships in their respective classes as well.

Sowa Slams Raceway Park

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, SEPT 2

Labor Day weekend all around the country is typically send saying goodbye to the summer but the holiday weekend at Raceway Park means racing and lots of it. Saturday has a full schedule of Veteran class and Vintage racing and Sunday its back to a complete schedule of all of the normal classes.

One of the most dominant riders at Raceway Park this season has been Mt. Holly Suzuki backed Michael Sowa. Sowa has consistently been a top runner in the 125 Novice class but it’s on the big bikes where he really shines. Sowa’s Suzuki 450 has been all but unstoppable in the 250 Novice class. Combined with a seventh place finish at Loretta Lynn’s this summer and a six race win streak coming into Sunday’s race Sowa was clearly the man to beat. With four moto wins and two second places he went home with the 125 and 250 Novice class overalls and second overall in the Open Four-Stroke class. Look for Sowa to make some noise next season in the amateur class.

Mic Sowa

With the annual Kawasaki Team Green Race of Champions only two races away many racers were trying to dial in the track and their setup in hopes of attracting some national attention at this premier event. A couple such riders were Expert class winners Ronnie Stewart and Adam Blessing. Stewart was the 250 Expert class winner with 2-1 moto scores with Sport Honda/Boyesen backed Blessing (1-2) in second and Bryan Wallace (5-2) in third. Blessing turned the tables on Stewart in 125 class racing by winning both motos on his way to the overall. Dakota Kessler (2-2) was second and Stewart (3-4) was third.

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, MAY 4

While the Supercross tour was in Sin City, Las Vegas for the final round of the 2008 Supercross Series Cochecton, New York’s Phil Nicoletti was getting ready for the outdoor series by tuning up at Raceway Park.

Phil Nicoletti

Phil Nicoletti

Nicoletti has been to Raceway Park before and is certainly no stranger to the winner’s circle at the New Jersey track not far from his New York home. The Motorsports Outlet backed Kawasaki rider rode three classes and if his riding on Sunday was any indication his 2008 outdoor season looks strong. Nicoletti won 5 of the 6 motos he entered for the race day and looks to be well prepared for the upcoming national series.

In 250 Expert class racing Nicoletti was followed across the line in the first moto by Mt Holly Suzuki rider Ronnie Stewart and KPS/Montgomeryville Cycle Center backed Dakota Kessler. Those 2 riders would swap positions in the second moto with Kessler getting second overall due to his better second moto finish.

Ronnie Stewart

Ronnie Stewart

Nicoletti’s winning ways were extended in the Collegeboy class taking both moto victories. Mt Holly KTM backed Bryan Wallace went 2-2 for second overall and Honda mounted David Szymanski went 3-3 for third overall.

Nicoletti’s only loss of the day came at the hands of Kessler. After winning the first moto with Kessler in second and Wallace in third Nicoletti’s poor start in the second moto forced him to come from the back of the pack through a full field of Open Expert riders. Kessler went on to win the moto followed Wallace and Nicoletti.

Dakota Kessler

Dakota Kessler

In 40+ Expert action Honda duo Jerry Seip and Jim McIlvaine grabbed early leads in both motos and put on their own personal battle for the win. The Copper’s Honda backed Seip and Montgomeryville Cycle Center sponsored McIlvaine have been rivals for years but this day was Seip’s turn to take the top honors. Seip’s 1-1 took the overall followed by McIlvaine with 2-2 scores and Suzuki mounted Chris Prenderville went 3-3 for third overall. Seip also went on to win the 45+ class with Stanley Poulsen in second and Chris Suydam in third and was also second overall in the 30+ Expert class behind Honda rider Darren Edsall. McIlvaine was third overall.

Dowd and Kessler are NJ State Champs!

Raceway Park in Old Bridge Township played host to the 23rd annual NJ State Championships presented by Suzuki on October 19th. The race was moved from its traditional summer date to a mid October date in order to be a qualifying event for the Tri-State Race of Champions. The Tri-State Race of Champions will take place at the beginning of November at Walden MX and feature the top racers in each class from each of 3 qualifying races, the NY, PA, and NJ State Championships, to determine the Tri-State Champion.

John Dowd

Sunday’s NJ State Championships took place under typical northeast fall weather. Crisp cool temperatures greeted the 500 plus riders in attendace and since this was the last race of Raceway Park’s season everyone wanted to end on a high note.

Dakota Kessler

Dakota Kessler

The first Open Expert moto of the day saw Fox backed Honda rider Adam Blessing grab the holeshot and the early lead. He was followed up “the staircase” by Moose Suzuki rider John Dowd and Thor/Dragon backed Honda rider Anthony Roth. When the lead pack came over “the plunge” on the first lap it was still Blessing, Dowd and Roth but they were joined by Raceway Park track champion KPS/MCC backed Dakota Kessler and Suzuki mounted James Decotis. Early into lap number 2 Kessler made his move on Blessing and tried to check out on the field. Meanwhile Roth, Dowd, and Decotis were locked in a battle swapping postions with each other on a turn by turn basis. In the end Kessler held on to take the win followed by Blessing, Dowd, Decotis and Roth.
Roth grabbed the holeshot ahead of Dowd and Decotis while the top 2 riders from moto 1, Kessler and Blessing, suffered from poor starts and would be forced to work through a very fast pack of racers. The Suzuki trio of Dowd, Decotis and Stewart remained close for the moto and would finish in that order. Blessing made a run on Stewart but would fall short at motos end and had to settle for fourth. In the end it was Dowd’s 3-1 moto scores taking the overall followed by Decotis (4-2) in second and Blessings (2-4) for third. First moto winner Kessler would go (1-5) for fourth overall and Stewart’s (7-3) rounded out the top 5.

Jimmy Decotis

Jimmy Decotis

Dowd would grab the holeshot in the first 250 Expert moto followed closely by Kessler, Decotis and Ocean County Powersports rider Ronnie Stewart. Dowd tried to make a pass at the end of the first lap but Kessler held off the former Supercross Lites Champion. Dowd got by the hometown rider and the two went on to battle for the lead. The two riders went on to battle Kessler eventually getting the upperhand to take the lead and moto win. Decotis also got by Dowd to go on for second with Dowd settling for third. Moto two Dowd again out front with the holeshot followed by Stewart and Kessler and the rest of the field. Dowd began to gap the field and even survived a late moto charge from Kesser to hold on for the moto victory. Kessler would finish second and Decotis would take third. Kessler’s (1-2) motos would be good enough for the overall followed by Dowd (3-1), Decotis (2-3), Stewart (4-4) and Michael Stryker (6-5) rounding out the top 5.

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, MAR. 29

When torrential rains forced the postponement of the regularly scheduled opening day Saturday March 29th became the new opening day for the 2008 Raceway Park motocross season. Now in it’s 33rd year of motocross racing in central New Jersey Raceway Park has survived. Every winter there are rumors that the facility being sold to property developers but March always seems to come around and motocross racing continues.
With the housing market in the Northeast in turmoil and talks of the economy in a recession many would wonder how many people could still afford to race. Well worry no longer, nearly 400 racers showed up to compete on the last Saturday of March with little worry of the economy ahead.

Ryan Gainey

Ryan Gainey

In his second season as an Expert racer Mt. Holly KTM sponsored Ryan Gainey showed everyone that he was the man to beat this season. Gainey was a perfect 4 for 4 taking the overalls in both the 250 and Open Expert classes on Saturday. In the first 250 Expert moto it was the Kawasaki of Wareham, Massachusetts resident Jacob Morrison in second and Honda rider Anthony Roth in third. The second moto saw KPS/Montgomeryville Cycle Center backed Dakota Kessler in second and Gainey’s Mt Holly teammate Ronnie Stewart in third. Stewart’s 4-3 motos gave him second overall and Bromley Suzuki backed Barry Carsten’s 5-4 netted him third overall. The Open Expert class was again a Gainey benefit but this time Morrison’s 2-3 motos got him the second overall for the day and Carsten was again third overall.

Barry Carsten

Barry Carsten

Carsten was able to take home first place money by winning both motos in the 40+ Expert class besting long time Raceway Park competitor Cooper’s Honda sponsored Jerry Seip and Kawasaki mounted Carlo Coen for second and third respectively.

Saturday nights in the summer are usually spend at BBQ picnics or getting ready to go out on the town after a long work week. But for many New Jersey motocross racers Saturday night is pit bike night and they are racing at Raceway Park.

Jesse Pierce

Jesse Pierce

The pit bike series has been well received by the riders and families alike and although the competition is fierce in each class racers remember that pit bike racing is fun and high fives and hand shakes usually wrap up each battle. The vibe is that of a great day at the races and everyone from young to old gets involved. Track manager Rich Schmidt even took some time out of his busy schedule. Rich used the skills that he teaches in his private motocross lessons to take the victories in both the 16+ 14/16” open regular class and the dash for cash as well.

Pit Bike Start

In the youngest class, 4-8 10” stock class, Sean Gillies showed that he was the top rider taking both moto victories along with the overall aboard his Honda CRF50. Local expert racer KPS backed Dakota Kessler was a double class winner taking command of both 16+ Open classes. MC Motorsports backed Jesse Pierce showed that he was the guy to beat in the 12-15 12” taking both motos over Freehold Honda backed JT Milne and MC Motorsports teammate Arthur Stryker. Pierce went on to take the victory in the 7-15 Youth Dash for Cash as well.

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, SEP 1

For the last 15 years, Labor Day Weekend at Raceway Park has been the site of the Vet and Vintage Reunion. The Kessler Pro Suspension sponsored event takes place on the Saturday of the long holiday weekend and runs a complete schedule of motos for all veteran classes, as well as a complete Vintage program. Bright and sunny skies greeted all the competitors that spent their afternoon at the track.

One of the most anticipated classes of the day was the Over 30 Expert class. The overall winner in this class would take home the coveted Zimmermann Cup, which was designed as a memorial to longtime racer Bruce Zimmermann, who died while jogging several years ago. His friends got together and, with the help of Mickey Kessler, the Zimmermann Cup was formed. Past winners read like a whose-who of the local Vet Expert field, including three-time winner Jim Kapitan, Jimmy McIlvaine, Jerry Seip, Rich Zupko, Brian Carroll, Joel Dengler and last year’s winner, Rich Zupko.

Mickey Kessler and Barry Carsten

Mickey Kessler and Barry Carsten

A full gate of riders lined up to kick off the Zimmermann Cup race but it was all about Barry Carsten. The Bromley’s/MSR/Arai/Scott Suzuki rider showed why the number on his bike is a national one and Barry went on to convincingly win both motos taking the overall and the Zimmermann Cup Trophy with him as well. At 40 years old Carsten still competes in an occasional national and if not for missing a couple of round due to injury he would have probably earned another national number. Carsten was not done just winning one class or a couple of motos. He went on to win both motos in the 25+ Expert and 40+ Expert classes as well going a perfect 6 for 6 on the afternoon.

Rich Zupko

A complete schedule of Vintage classes was run as well for bike back to the beginning of motocross all the way up to the more modern eighties and nineties.
