Futrell’s Four-For-Four Foray 6/29/2008

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ

Warm temperatures and a threat of severe storms greeted the more than 600 riders who came to Old Bridge Township’s Raceway Park for round seven of the Ultimate MX Series. The District 6 Promoters Group created this new-for-2008 series that will take place over the summer, with a race at each of the district’s nine tracks. With contingencies on the line from all of the major manufacturers at most rounds and a series points championship at stake, the competition was sure to be intense.

And intense it was, as some of the fastest riders in the Northeast showed up to compete. The big winner for the weekend was clearly Clinton, North Carolina’s Taylor Futrell. The VPE/Serious Racewear Honda rider showed the fans at Englishtown that he would be the guy to beat in the A class this August in Tennessee. Although Futrell didn’t get the holeshot in every moto, he did quickly dispatch the rest of the class on his way to a perfect four-for-four day.

Keeping Futrell honest in the 250 Expert class was Thor-backed Kawasaki rider Brian Mulcahy, who used 2-4 moto scores to claim second overall behind the Honda speedster. Third overall was Shift/Matt’s Honda-backed Ryan Blizzard, with 4-3 finishes.

In 450 Expert-class racing, KPS/MCC-backed Dakota Kessler went 2-2 to keep Futrell in sight for second overall, with another Honda rider in third – Trapani’s/Dragon-sponsored Anthony Roth, whose 4-3 scores narrowly edged New Jersey hero Barry Carsten’s 3-4 tally for third overall.

As good as Futrell was in the Expert class, Cicero, New York’s Josh Emmi was just as dominant… almost. Only Sal Calamita was able to stop the Kawasaki rider’s dominance. Emmi won both 450 B motos, with Kyle Sidle putting his Lebanon Valley Cycles-backed Suzuki in second with 2-2 finishes and Delmarva Powersports-sponsored Joshua Willin using 3-5 scores for third. Emmi was able to win the first 250 B moto, followed by Sidle and Yamaha rider Kody Renzland. In the second moto, Honda-mounted Calamita was able to ruin Emmi’s perfect day. Emmi held on to second, with Sidle in third. Emmi won the overall, followed by Calamita and Sidle in second and third, respectively.

Despite the midafternoon rain delay, the track held up well and the racing was exciting in all classes. For more information on the Ultimate MX Series, visit www.amadistrict6.com; for more on Raceway Park, visit www.racewaypark.com.

Zupko Wins One for Dad 3/25/2007

ENGLISHTOWN, NJFor many, above all, family is the most important thing in life. There is the biological family, and then there are those friends who are close enough to be considered family. The motocross community is viewed by many to be that type of family. We are a tight-knit group of people always ready to reach out and help one of our own. At no time is this more evident than when death suddenly takes one of our family.

On March 17, the motocross community lost a great man when Richard Zupko Sr. passed away. Mr. Zupko died suddenly of a heart attack, to the shock of his family and friends. Mr. Zupko was a great supporter of motocross racing in New Jersey and, along with his son Richie, ran Powerline Motocross Park back in the 1990s. He was always there with a smile and a kind word. Mr. Zupko will be greatly missed.

When it came time to pay respect to a lost friend, the line stretched out of the funeral parlor and around the block, with many waiting for several hours to get in and say their final goodbyes.

Zupko’s son Richie Zupko (413) has been a successful racer during his motocross career, but the most emotional win of his life came on Sunday, March 25, in the Over 30 Expert class. The first moto saw Richie fighting a great battle with Kawasaki rider Darren Edsall and Honda pilot Jerry Seip. Richie would eventually settle into the lead and go on to take the victory.

During halftime, in between motos, the Raceway Park family took the opportunity to say goodbye to Mr. Zupko. A lap of honor took place, in which all the riders and staff lined up on the starting gate and rode around the track in single file. Each rider paid a $10 entry fee, with all of the money going to the American Heart Association, in Mr. Zupko’s name. At one point, the line stretched almost all the way around the racetrack. It was a fitting way to say goodbye.

When Richie took the holeshot at the start of the second Over 30 Expert moto, everyone knew it would be his for the taking. Despite attempts by Seip and Edsall to keep him in sight, the moto win and overall victory would be Richie’s. With family and close friends nearby, celebrating his victory, Richie was clearly very emotional after winning that one for his dad.

Godspeed, Rich Zupko Sr.

A Tale of Two Days 4/14/2007

ENGLISHTOWN, NJTwo words say it all. Loretta Lynn’s. The road to the Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in August begins many months before. If you want to race against the 42 best riders in your class, you must start in March and April and do well in the local area qualifiers, and from there you go on to the regional qualifier and, finally, the big show.

On the weekend of April 14 and 15, for the first time in its 32-year history, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park played host to an area qualifier. With the weather forecast differing greatly for the two days, riders were going to have to contend with all that nature could throw at them.

Saturday’s program went off under sunny skies and in cool temperatures, but the racing was anything but chilly. Several riders make the long trip to New Jersey in search of a National Championship. Honda rider Oscar Diaz from Dade City, Florida, showed impressive speed en route to finishing fourth in the MX Lites A class and winning the Motocross A class. Also making a long trip were the Medaglia brothers, Tyler and Jeremy, from Ontario, Canada. Jeremy won both the Motocross and MX Lites B Stock classes on his Yamaha, while Suzuki-mounted Tyler was the winner of the Lites A class and the nonqualifying Open A class.

Sunday’s weather was the complete opposite. Overnight, a powerful nor’easter blew in, bringing torrential rains and winds with gusts up to 50 mph. The storm, which encompassed the entire East Coast, caused widespread flooding and even temporarily closed one of the roads to the track. But motocross runs rain or shine, and although not all classes had enough entrants to run, several classes braved the conditions and ran their moto. Due to the track and weather conditions, a one-moto format was run and practice was canceled. Riders were given a hot lap to check out the track before their moto. The track was shortened due to safety concerns, and racing was started.

One of the best races of the muddy afternoon was the MX Lites C Modified contest. Zak Klaptosky made a last-ditch pass on leader and fellow Kawasaki rider Kyle Thompson to take the victory.

Local Suzuki rider Frank Lettieri (461) was a double-class winner on Sunday, taking the victories in both the Supermini (12-15) and MX Lites Schoolboy (14-16) classes.

Good luck to all of those riders who made the cut and will go on to the regional.
